How Much Per Square Foot to Hang Cement Board?

Cement board is one of the heaviest types of underlayment you can use with your ceramic tile and natural stone installations. As a result it requires a fairly serious amount of physical effort, and if you are not up to the task you will need to hire a professional to install the boards in vertical areas. The price for hanging cement board varies across the nation and based upon the complexity of the installation area.
  1. Basic Hanging

    • The cost of hanging concrete board is usually buried in the overall cost of a tile installation, as the tile installers are generally the same individuals who hang the board. Alternatively you can hire a drywall contractor to do the work when they are hanging the drywall if you are working on a new home and have all of the material on hand. The average cost to hang concrete board in a simple, straight area ranges from $3 to $5 per square foot, at the time of publication.

    Complex Areas

    • For hanging cement board, the more complex the area is the the higher the cost. While straight lay areas can be done for under $5 per square foot, at the time of publication, in most cases, once you get into hanging ceiling or strange angles and complex corner wraps, the cost rises from anywhere between $6 and $10 per square foot due to the amount of work involved.

    Remodel or New Home

    • There are extra costs involved in hanging the cement board if you live in the home you are remodeling. This is because the contractors must protect the rest of your home while they are hanging the cement board, which can include covering your floors with drop cloths, covering doorways with plastic sheeting and utilizing a cleaning service after the fact. New homes, however, do not have furniture and carpet, and thus do not have associated cleaning or protection fees.

    Trash Removal

    • In complex areas there will be a lot of waste material from the cut-offs. You have several options for waste disposal, depending on your budget. You can rent a dumpster from your local trash company and factor that into the price, or you can ask your contracting company how much it charge for trash removal. The company can include it in their square foot bid or attach it as a flat fee for trash removal. You can also haul it to the junkyard yourself.
