How to Build Bookshelves in an Existing Nook

A nook is a small alcove or recess often utilized by homeowners as a space to host a TV or seating area. Sometimes nooks may be seen as an awkward organization of space if you're unsure of how to best utilize the area. Transforming a nook into a bookshelf is a moderately simple project that adds function as well as design to the home. Although many designs are available for building elaborate bookshelves, amateur builders may wish to begin with a simpler design.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and depth of the nook with a measuring tape. Record the measurements for later use.

    • 2

Pick the shelf panel you want to install. Shelf panels are available in metal, glass and wood. The design you choose will depend largely on the overall decor of the home. Purchase enough shelf panels to cover the nook properly.

    • 3

Mark the measurements of the nook onto the shelf panel. Cut the panel using a power or hand saw. If you purchase metal or glass panels, you may need to have a professional cut the panel.

    • 4

Mark the location of the support pins on the wall using a pencil. Keep in mind that the distance between each mark should measure about 2 inches. To ensure the corresponding pins on either side of the wall are balanced, use a level. The pins help hold the shelves in place. Typically, each shelf requires four support pins.

Opt for larger and stronger support pins if the shelf panel is a heavy material or if you plan to place a heavy load on the shelf. If the nook measures greater than 18 inches in depth, you may need six support pins per shelf, three pins on each side.

    • 5

Drill a hole on each mark for the support pins. Insert the pins into the desired locations. Finish the bookshelf by laying the shelf panels atop the support pins.
