How to Demolish Cabinets

Demolition is part of the remodeling process. If you are remodeling your kitchen or bathroom you need to remove the old cabinets first. You may want to demolish your old cabinets because they are not worth saving. Although it can be a dirty job, demolition is a fast way to remove cabinets. You can demolish your own cabinets with just a few basic tools and save money.

      Put on the safety glasses and gloves. You should wear safety gear at all times when doing demolition work.

      Slide all the drawers out of the cabinets and remove them. Remove all the shelves.Take off the cabinet doors by using a screwdriver to remove all the hinge screws. This will give you a clear view of the inside of the cabinets. You can also place the pry bar between the cabinet door and the cabinet frame and rip the doors off the cabinets.

      Hit the inside of a top cabinet with the sledge hammer. Start with the cabinet on the end. Strike the bottom of the cabinet from the inside with the sledge hammer. The cabinet will start to come apart. Use the pry bar to separate the sides and bottom of the cabinet. Repeat these procedures for the rest of the top cabinets.

      Cut the countertop with the reciprocating saw. Start at the front and cut toward the wall. Make several cuts a few feet apart along the cabinet top. Hit the cabinet top with the sledge hammer. Swing the sledge hammer upward to strike the counter top from the bottom. Use the pry bar to separate the pieces of the cabinet top from the base cabinet.

      Hit the inside of the end base cabinet with the sledge hammer. Swing the sledge hammer down to crush the cross supports on the top of the base cabinets. Use the pry bar to separate the cabinet parts. Repeat this procedure for the rest of the base cabinets.

      Remove the screws from the backs of the cabinets with the screwdriver. You can also use the pry bar to pull the cabinet backs off the wall. Use the pry bar to remove any remaining cabinet parts from the wall. Remove all debris and clean up the mess.
