How to: Built-In Forward-Facing Kid's Bookcase

Forward-facing bookshelves display your children’s books in an interesting manner. Unlike normal bookshelves that only show the book’s binding, the forward-facing bookshelf shows the book’s whole front, enticing your children to read more. Make the forward-facing bookshelves with vinyl rain gutters, which is both easy to clean and durable. Once installed, fill them with your children’s favorite books.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the rain gutters to the size you want with a saw. Sand the ends smooth. Blow off the plastic dust and apply the epoxy to the end cap. Place the end cap over the rain gutters sanded edges and allow it to dry.

    • 2

Locate the wall studs with a stud finder. Mark each stud’s location with the pencil.

    • 3

Clip the vinyl gutter into the bracket. Hold the bracket up to the wall over the stud. Drill the bracket in place with a screw.

    • 4

Measure to the next stud and place the other bracket over it. Place the leveler on the gutter ensuring the bookshelves hang evenly. Drill the second bracket into the wall. Drill any remaining brackets into the wall for that gutter as well. Two to three brackets are required for every 5 feet of the bookshelf.

Repeat the process on as many bookshelves as you want to hang in your child’s room. Space the bookshelves about 1 to 2 feet apart if you are installing them vertically.
