How to Set Up a Studio Curtain as a Room Divider

Dividing a room into two distinct spaces doesn’t always require building a new wall down its center. An inexpensive yet effective option is to string up a curtain instead. With a studio curtain, you can create a divider that’s easily moved into place when you need to create separate spaces in a room and just as easily moved out of the way when you desire a more open floor plan. The divider is also quick to install, with only a drill or screwdriver necessary to mount the rod needed to hold the curtain in place, making it an extremely easy DIY project.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the locations on the walls with a piece of chalk where you wish to install the closet wall flanges that will support the adjustable curtain dowel rod holding the studio curtain that divides the room. Place the marks on wall studs for the best support possible. Locate the studs with a stud finder, running the finder over the wall and watching for an indication that a stud is present.

    • 2

Make certain the marks are at the same height by measuring from the floor to the first mark on the wall with a tape measure and using the measured height to place the opposing wall’s mark. Leave 3 inches from the top of the mount to the ceiling to allow for smooth movement of the curtain.

    • 3

Mount the closet rod flanges onto the marked locations on the opposing walls with drywall screws. Hold the closet rod flange against the wall with the opening in the flange pointed upward, and then drive a screw through the mounting holes into the drywall and wood stud beneath with a drill using a screw bit.

Measure the distance between the bases inside the rod flanges using the tape measure. Assemble the adjustable rod by placing one of the rod cylinders within the other and then extending the two outward to the needed length. Slide the dowel rod into the closet rod, using the opening at the top of the flange.

Hang the curtains desired from the rod. Use divided curtains to provide an easy method of passing through and of opening up the space by moving each half of the curtain to a side of the room.
