DIY Recessed Wall Niche

A recessed wall niche can be used for a variety of display and storage purposes. If your wall cavity is more than 6 inches deep, you can install a recessed bookcase. For more shallow openings, it is easy to create a spice rack, bottle display, wine rack or any type of storage or display area you might want. You can finish the opening with a premade insert, or you can line it yourself using wood. One do-it-yourself niche idea combines a recycled medicine cabinet with other materials to create a functional and attractive niche.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the used medicine cabinet on a work table. Remove the mirrored door using a screwdriver and pliers. Wash out the interior of the cabinet. Most older cabinets in recycle lots are metal. Use dishwashing soap and a scrub brush to clean the interior, particularly in the corners. Dry the metal immediately with a rag.

    • 2

Sand the interior of the cabinet with 60- to 120-grit sandpaper to remove any rust, peeling paint and uneven surface. Wipe the cabinet clean with rags.

    • 3

Spray the interior of the cabinet with spray paint. Select a color, texture or type that works with the decor of the room where you will be installing the cabinet. For a kitchen spice cabinet, match the color to the stones on the floor or the metallic color of the metal trim in the room. Allow the paint to dry for four hours.

Cut wallpaper for an exact fit of the back wall of the cabinet. Glue the wallpaper to the cabinet using wallpaper glue or a spray adhesive.

    • 5

Attach sheet magnets to the back of lightweight apothecary jars that have clear lids. This will allow you to use the magnetic quality of the metal cabinet as a spice rack in the kitchen or for storage of small craft items, garage items, bathroom hair pieces and other items.

Cut a hole in your drywall between two studs to match the size of the cabinet. Use a drywall saw or knife and a straight edge. Insert the cabinet into the hole. Screw the cabinet to the studs with screws using a screwdriver.

    • 7

Dress up the front of the niche using a picture frame with an opening that is slightly smaller than the opening of the niche. Nail the frame to the studs using a nail gun. Fill in your nail holes with matching wood fill.
