How to Cut Heating Ducts in Floors That Have Carpeting

Heating ducts are often a necessary evil in those locations that have any sort of winter. Fortunately, as long as you already have a heating system in place, it isn't too difficult to cut a hole out of newly-laid carpet for an existing heating duct or to install a new duct and register. The key to cutting the hole properly is in measuring. As long as you measure the hole properly, you can make a clean cut through your carpeting.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the size of the hole needed for the duct as well as the size of the register you will be installing.

    • 2

Mark the space for the hole with chalk.

    • 3

Cut the carpet away from the flooring with a utility knife. Remove any frayed edges with scissors.

    • 4

Use a skill saw or reciprocating saw to cut through the flooring underneath the carpet.

    • 5

Place your register inside the hole and make sure enough of the carpet is removed. Trim as needed.

    • 6

Attach the duct to the register, through the hole, with the included screws.
