How to Design a Family Lounge

A family lounge can be a cozy place to get away, relax and enjoy each other’s company. Designing a family lounge can be as simple as converting a basement, bonus room or loft into a fun-filled media center, game room or miniature movie screening room. Family lounges can be tailored to meet the individual tastes and styles of different family members, with everyone contributing design ideas to their ideal family fun space.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a list of what you want the room to be used for. Will you have table games like ping pong or pinball, a television set or video games? Do you want open space for playing physical games or do you prefer a cozy, den-like environment for watching movies? Perhaps the lounge will be used as a reading room or a quiet study area complete with study guides, a computer and office supplies. Encourage all family members to provide input about what the room will be used for.

Decide what type of build-out is necessary to meet your family’s specific needs. You may opt to install an entertainment center, construct raised flooring to accommodate theater seating or add a bar for serving refreshments.

    • 3

Take measurements of the space you have available for the family lounge. Make a diagram of the room including windows, doors, electrical outlets and cable wires. Sketch out a rough design that shows where major pieces of furniture will go. Consider lighting needs and the placement of existing electrical wiring.

Select new flooring, if desired. Again, consider the use of the room. Low-pile carpeting is easy to keep clean and helps create better acoustics if you’re using the room for music or television viewing; hardwood or decorative concrete floors are ideal if you’re planning to use the lounge for dancing or if you expect heavy foot traffic.

    • 5

Install your largest pieces of furniture first, such as couches, tables, gaming consoles, computer work stations or media centers. Arrange furniture in such a way that you can easily sit and talk with one another.

Decorate the lounge to meet everyone’s tastes. Elements to consider include an old fashioned popcorn machine, an antique soda fountain, vintage movie posters or family pictures. Add over-stuffed floor pillows, throws and even a special cubby for bathrobes and slippers. Comfortable over-sized furniture and muted tones and lighting will contribute to a relaxing environment.
