How to Install Wilsonart Stair Treads

Wilsonart is a laminate company that manufactures products made specifically for floors, countertops and stair components such as treads and risers. Stair tread laminate comes in one piece and includes the nosing, which overlaps the riser to add an elegant look to the stairs. To install treads, cut them down to size and glue them directly to the stairs. When installing the laminate treads, use Wilsonart's specialty glue or construction adhesive.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the stair tread's width and length with a tape measure. Hook the tape measure to the nose of the Wilsonart tread material, measure back to the stair tread width and place a mark.

    • 2

Place a matching mark on the opposite side of the Wilsonart tread material. Hook the clip of the chalk box to one mark and stretch the line to the opposite mark. Snap a chalk line across the entire length of the Wilsonart tread material.

    • 3

Hook the tape to the end of the Wilsonart material and measure to the length of stair tread that you'll need. Place a mark and scribe a line across the surface to lay out the stair tread. Double-check your measurements before making any cuts.

    • 4

Equip a circular saw with a fine-tooth cutting blade. Adjust the saw's table depth so that the blade will cut slightly deeper than the Wilsonart tread material. Place the saw's blade on the snapped chalk line and cut the material.

    • 5

Dry fit the Wilsonart laminate to the stair tread you will attach it to. Make any adjustments as needed.

    • 6

Flip the Wilsonart laminate over to expose the underside. Apply a 1/2-inch bead of construction adhesive along the inside corner of the nose and tread. Space four or five more beads evenly across the length of the laminate material.

    • 7

Turn the Wilsonart laminate over and set it on top of the stair tread. Push down firmly on the laminate material's surface to distribute the adhesive between the tread and laminate. Run your hands over the entire surface of the laminate to make sure the glue is evenly spread for a smooth appearance.

Repeat the process with each stair tread.
