Remodeling a Partition Wall in a Condo

Improving the look of a dividing wall separating your space from a neighbor's requires creative thinking. This wall is a large space for hanging artwork, mirrors or wallpaper. If the condo wall is next to a staircase going up to a second level, the challenge of remodeling is a little more difficult. The lower level of this wall, next to living space, may call for different options than an upstairs section of the same wall.

Instructions

Install mirrors to visually increase the size of all surrounding space. Use mirror tiles from floor to ceiling, as one option on the partition wall. Place chair rail material across the wall and glue custom mirrors on the top half of the wall only as another option. Ask a remodeling center to provide the custom mirror material in at least three sections for a 12-foot wide wall.

Hang artwork on this wall and make it a focal point wall. Buy five matching picture frames 18-by-24 inches, for example. Matt and frame five black-and-white outdoor scenes that visually complement each other. Install artwork on the partition wall and arrange living room furniture around the wall so anyone can enjoy the “view” while reading or relaxing.

Apply wallpaper to enhance a partition wall next to a staircase. Buy wallpaper that is foil or flocked, for example, as opposed to plain wallpaper with no special finish. Install wallpaper that harmonizes with the rest of the room in color and design but feel free to use a unique wallpaper on the partition wall and another, complementary wallpaper or painted design on the rest of the room.

Build bookcases or display cabinets along a partition wall. Store favorite books and art objects from floor to ceiling in a bookcase with glass doors, for example, trimmed with crown molding at the ceiling level. Use solid-panel doors on the lower half of the bookcases or cabinets and glass doors or open shelving on the top sections above waist-high, as additional options.

Construct faux windows on the condo partition wall. Make the wall look as if it has two large outdoor windows by installing mirrors and window framing with panes. Use this illusion to create the feeling you can look out on a side yard, even if you live in the middle of a row of condos. Sketch the “windows” and wall areas in detail on graph paper before you begin creating such faux windows. Space them precisely so they look balanced with the entire room adjacent to the partition wall.
