How to Install an Uneven Wall Laminate Countertop

Laminate counters are single pieces of preformed wood with a colorful plastic top coating. They cost less than other forms of solid stone counters and most homeowners can install laminate without additional help. If the rear wall of the installation area is uneven, gaps appear behind the counter. To solve this issue, a process called scribing cuts the laminate counter back so that it conforms to the wall and thus disguises the irregularities.

Things You'll Need

  • Saw horses
  • Safety glasses
  • Belt sander
  • Tape measure
  • Compass
  • Pencil

Instructions

    • 1

Set the laminate counter on top of two saw horses with the finished side facing upward. Look at the back of the counter at the raised rear panel. You will see a strip of wood located on the back of the panel where the counter normally meets the wall.

    • 2

Don safety glasses and plug in a belt sander tool. Turn the sander on and angle it under the bottom of the wooden strip at a 45 degree angle. Begin sanding the bottom of the strip until the top rear edge forms a 45 degree angle. You are filing away the bottom so that the remaining portion is easier to scribe to the wall.

    • 3

Carry the laminate counter to the final installation location and set it in place. Walk to the front left side and measure the amount of overhang from the cabinet to the edge of the counter. Repeat the process at the right front edge of the counter, noting each measurement.

    • 4

Insert a pencil into a compass and set the upper angle to the larger of the two measurements. Place the metal tip of the compass on the wall and the pencil on the rear edge of the counter. Pull the compass along the entire length of the counter without moving the angle. The pencil only draws lines on areas of the counter that require trimming.

Pick the counter up and place it back on top of the saw horses. Sand down the back of the wooden strip again only in the location where you see a pencil mark. Depending on how uneven the walls are, you may have skips in the pencil line, or it may be wavy all the way across the counter.

    • 6

Place the counter back into place on the cabinets and push it as far against the wall as possible.

    • 7

Open the cabinets under the counter. Mount metal “L” brackets to the underside so that one arm is on the counter bottom and the other arm is on the cabinet. Insert 1-inch long screws into the brackets using a power drill. Install additional brackets around the underside of the counter every 12 inches.
