How to Design Electrical Outlets in Bathrooms

Designing electrical outlets in bathrooms requires understanding basic electrical wiring for safety and accessibility. Along with preparing outlet receptacles for safety, usability and style should be considered. While designing the electrical outlets in bathrooms, take notes and make a detailed list to take along to the store when purchasing the outlets.

Instructions

    • 1

Refer to the house blueprints to understand the electrical wiring in the bathrooms. At least one receptacle should be in each bathroom, no matter how small or large the bathroom is.

    • 2

Dedicate the electrical circuit wiring for each outlet in the bathrooms. Each receptacle should be rated 120V/20A, and the installation should be within three feet of the lavatory or sink area. The circuit shouldn’t branch to any other circuits that power other things such as lights, fans or heaters.

    • 3

Consider how many electrical appliances will be used in each bathroom. This includes accessories such as electric razors, hair dryers, curling irons and other electric-powered items. Consider how many people will use the bathroom to estimate how many outlet plugs will be convenient for the users.

    • 4

Select the number of outlets required to plug in electric-powered accessories. Power outlets are available with single, double, triple and quadruple plugs. Generally, not all outlet plugs will be used at once. Two separate outlets can be installed in bathrooms with several users and a larger number of electrical accessories, such as the children’s bathroom.

Select the style and color for each of the bathroom’s electrical outlets.
