How to Hang a Double-Swinging Closet Door

Properly installing a set of pre-hung double-swinging closet doors can be challenging, even for homeowners with moderate carpentry experience. In addition to plumbing the door set in two planes, the individual doors must be accurately aligned with each other, to operate properly. Fortunately, specialized hanging clips are available to simplify the job. The installation kit includes seven clips. The clips hold the jambs of the pre-hung door to the framing studs. No special tools or advanced carpentry skills are needed to complete this project.

Instructions

  1. Prepare Door Set

    • 1

Install a hanging bracket near the top center of the door frame. Each bracket has a rectangular portion that is screwed to the frame and a triangular portion that is later screwed to the framing studs. Align the bent edge of the bracket with the front edge of the top of the door frame. Precise centering is not necessary. Using a drill and driving bit, screw the bracket to the door frame with the fasteners provided.

    • 2

Screw three hanging brackets to the left side of the door frame. Each bracket is positioned just below a hinge, with the bent edge of the bracket aligned with the front left edge of the door frame. Precise placement of the brackets in relation to the hinges is not necessary. The brackets will not be visible after you install and trim the door.

    • 3

Repeat to install three brackets on the right side of the door frame.

    Install Door Set

    • 4

Draw two vertical lines on the wall, each about 1/2 inch from the rough opening for the door, using a carpenter's level and a pencil. Place two wooden shims on the floor inside and perpendicular to the rough opening. The shims should be placed 2 or 3 inches from the framing studs, with their thickest portions facing outward. The shims will allow you to make fine adjustments in the door position as you install it.

    • 5

Place the door in the rough opening, with the lower portion of the frame resting on the shims. Center the door to the opening. Install the left side of the door first. The screw slot on the bracket has multiple reference lines. Align the same reference line on each of the left-side brackets to the vertical line on the wall. Using fasteners provided in the kit, screw the left-side brackets to the left-side framing studs.

    • 6

Inspect the tops of the doors. They should be in perfect alignment in order to open and close properly. If necessary, raise or lower the right-side door by moving the shim beneath the door. Once the doors are properly aligned, screw the hanging brackets on the right side of the door set to the right framing studs.

Screw the bracket at the top of the door set to the top framing member.
