How to Install Laminate Wood Flooring Around Stair Balusters

Installing laminate flooring is an economical way to get the look of hardwood at a lower cost. Besides floors, laminate planks installed on stairs transform the appearance and feel of the interior space and give the stairway a stylish finish. Although the planks are relatively easy to install without professional assistance, placing them around stair spindles or balusters requires preparation. However, detailed measurements and careful cutting ensure the laminate will fit snugly around stair balusters.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Laminate planks
  • Jigsaw
  • Flooring adhesive
  • Bullnose molding
  • Straightedge

Instructions

    • 1

Extend a tape measure from the wall to the inner edge of the baluster along the topmost stair tread to determine the width. Also measure the depth of the tread -- the distance from the back edge of the tread to the front edge, or nose. Transfer the measurements to a laminate plank and cut along the lines so the plank fits snugly between the wall and baluster.

    • 2

Dry-fit the laminate plank to ensure it forms a snug fit, then trim excess around the edges if required. Spread flooring adhesive over the back of this plank and lower it over the tread. Press the plank over the tread so it adheres to the surface and forms a secure bond.

    • 3

Measure the space between the end of the installed laminate plank and the end of the tread. Flip a bullnose molding plank over so its ledge faces upward. Measure and mark this distance from the lip of the molding inward toward the center and mark the plank on both sides.

    • 4

Join the two marks on the molding with a straight line using a straightedge. Cut the molding plank across this line so it matches the length of the side ledge of the tread. Also, transfer the tread width measurement across the cut bullnose and cut along the line to trim its width.

    • 5

Extend a tape measure to calculate the gap between the edge of the step and the corner baluster. Also measure the width of this baluster, and the gap between it and the second baluster. Extend the measuring tape from the edge of the second baluster to the back of the step and record your findings. Double-check the measurements to ensure they're accurate.

    • 6

Place the bullnose molding so its lip faces upward and away from you. Transfer the series of measurements along its lower edge. Measure and mark the width of the baluster on the molding from the marks that represent the side of the baluster. Join these marks with a straightedge to form outlines for the balusters. Cut out the squares with a jigsaw.

Place the bullnose molding over the end of the stair to ensure the cut sections fit snugly around the balusters, or trim any excess if required. Spread flooring adhesive over the back of the molding and press it on the end of the stair. Repeat the process for the remaining stairs.
