How to Reinstall a Stair Banister

When you remove a stair banister from the wall, you must relocate the banister slightly once you anchor it to the wall again. By removing the screws that anchor the banister to the wall, you strip out the screw holes slightly, which can lead to the banister pulling away from the wall later. The banister needs to be securely anchored to the wall, in the event someone slips on the stairs and grabs the banister for support.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold a level vertically over the middle of the banister’s old screw holes. Mark short vertical line above the hole.

    • 2

Mark the vertical line ½ inch above the center of the existing hole to make a cross shape.

    • 3

Drill pilot holes at the center of the cross-shaped mark. Hold the banister against the wall until the mounting holes in the banister’s brackets line up with the pilot holes. Drive screws through the mounting holes in the brackets and into the wall.
