How to Frame Walls With Closets & Doors

When you are framing walls for a room, you can easily build a typical frame. Many people are unsure of the best way to approach a wall that has a doorway or a closet in it. Creating a place for the door frame or a closet doorway in the wall is not difficult. It takes planning and bit different approach. It is easiest to do this if you have a framed door to install, but you can use this method if you are building your own door or installing sliding doors.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the wall, and determine where you want to your doorway. If you want larger doors for your closet than a traditional room door, measure how big you want the doors to be. Measure from the floor to the ceiling, and subtract 4 inches from that number. This will be the length of your height pieces. Measure from the top of the ceiling to the top of the door frame and subtract 4 inches to determine the length of the pieces above your door frame.

Cut the two-by-fours for your wall frame -- you will need two pieces that are the length of your wall frame and one piece that is the length of the doorway. If you have two doorways, you will need one for each door way. You will need enough height pieces to go on each end of your frame and every 18 inches from each end, and one for each side of your door frame. You will need enough pieces to go above your door frame with 18 inches in between them. Use at least two pieces on a standard sized door frame.

Assemble your door frame. Lay out the bottom piece and mark where your door frame will go. Nail height pieces to each end of the bottom piece. Use two nails per height piece. Next nail in the door frame pieces so the door frame will just fit in the space. Nail the other height pieces in 18 inches apart from each other across the bottom of the frame. The pieces may be closer together on either side of the door frame.

Nail the top piece of the frame to the top of each height piece. Nail the cross piece for the top of the door frame at the correct height. Nail the short pieces that connect the top of the door frame to the top of the ceiling frame in place.

    • 5

Install the wall frame in the proper place. Nail the frame into each ceiling joist and on each side of each height piece along the floor. Where the wall frame joins a corner piece, nail it at the top and the bottom and every 18 inches from floor to ceiling.

Cut out the bottom of the wall frame where the door will go using a handsaw.

Nail the framed door into place at the door frame. Complete this step after you have installed the drywall on your wall frame if you are installing a tracked door, such as a sliding door or a bi-fold door.
