How to Make a Ceiling Mounted Clothes Rack From PVC

Building a clothes rack can make the last stage of the laundry process easier by providing a place for hanging dress clothes and other items that cannot be easily folded. It can also help save on energy costs by allowing you to air-dry clothes instead of drying them in a clothes dryer. Installing a hanging rack made from PVC is a relatively straightforward process that requires only basic plumbing and carpentry supplies.

Things You'll Need

  • 1-inch-diameter PVC pipe
  • Measuring tape
  • Hack saw
  • PVC adhesive
  • 1-inch-diameter PVC T-fitting

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the length of the PVC clothes rack. Measure a section of 1-inch-diameter PVC pipe with a measuring tape. Cut the pipe to length with a hack saw.

    • 2

Divide the length of the PVC pipe in half. Mark the center of the pipe and cut it in half with a hack saw.

    • 3

Apply PVC adhesive to the inside of a 1-inch-diameter PVC T-fitting and to one end of each half of the pipe. Insert the pipe ends into the T-fitting and allow the adhesive to bond for one hour.

    • 4

Apply PVC adhesive to the inside of two L-shaped, 1-inch-diameter PVC elbows, and to the ends of the pipes. Insert the ends of the pipes into the elbows, with the elbows facing the same direction as the T-fitting. Allow the adhesive to bond for one hour.

Place the clothes rack in the desired location on the ceiling. Drill pilot holes through the elbows and T-fitting into the ceiling joist at a 45-degree angle with a drill. Insert and tighten 4-inch wood screws through the pilot holes to secure the rack to the ceiling joist.
