How to Change a Recessed Lighting Fixture to a Dome Fixture

If you have a recessed light that you want to change to a ceiling-mounted dome fixture, you'll be happy to know that you can use the existing wiring to hook up the new light fixture. That will save you a lot of time and effort. But there is some other significant work that needs to be done when you remove the old fixture and replace it with a new one.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to the circuit you'll be working on at the home's circuit breaker panel. Pull off the trim ring on the base of the recessed lamp and remove the bulb from inside.

    • 2

Loosen the screws on the inside of the recessed fixture and pull the fixture down out of the ceiling when it's loose. Remove the wire nuts connecting the wires to the recessed lamp.

    • 3

Cut out the ceiling with a keyhole saw if necessary to place the light fixture box into the ceiling. Feed the wiring through the hole in the side of the new light fixture box and place it in the ceiling, even with the edge of the ceiling surface. Screw the box into the wood joist above the ceiling.

    • 4

Strip 1/2 inch of insulation off the ends of the home wiring, if necessary.

    • 5

Attach your new light fixture's mounting plate onto the light fixture box. Remove 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of the wires of the new light, if necessary.

    • 6

Match the wires of the new fixture to the wires of the home wiring, by color. Place a wire nut over the ends of each pair of wires and twist until tight.

    • 7

Place the new light fixture onto the mounting hardware and attach it with the light fixture's included hardware.
