How to Put A/C in an Attic

An attic can provide additional living space for an office, recreation room or bedroom, which can be particularly useful if you have limited living space in the main area of your home. However, it can be difficult to control the temperature in an attic -- the summer sun can make an attic space uncomfortably warm. Adding a ductless wall air conditioner in an attic can help control the temperature of this space without the need for extending ductwork from your central air conditioning unit.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the location of the inside air conditioning unit. The unit should be at least 3 feet from any furniture in your attic.

    • 2

Trace the outline of a 3-inch-diameter conduit on the inside wall of the attic. The conduit houses the power cord, condensation tube and Freon tube that connects the indoor unit to the outdoor compressor. Cut along the outline through the interior and exterior wall with a reciprocating saw.

    • 3

Check the ground beneath the indoor air conditioning unit to ensure that it is level. Place a 1-inch-thick concrete pad on the ground to support the compressor unit. Position the compressor on the concrete pad.

    • 4

Feed a 3-inch conduit through the hole in the wall. Feed the compressor power cord, condensation tube and Freon tube through the conduit.

    • 5

Connect the condensation and Freon tubes to the indoor air conditioning unit.

    • 6

Attach the indoor air conditioning unit to the attic wall with the included screws, using an electric screwdriver.

    • 7

Plug in the compressor unit and the indoor air conditioning unit. Turn on the air conditioner and test it to ensure that the unit works properly.
