Ideas for a Loft in a Tiny House

If you live small home, a loft can expand your living space and give you new options in your tiny house. Small houses could range from spaces small enough to fit on a 7-by-18-foot trailer to 500- to 800-square-foot home. While a loft may not be large, in a small home, it can offer essential living and storage space.
  1. Loft Designs

    • Lofts are an essential space in the tiniest homes. These typically span the width of the house and may cover as much as half of its length. Lofts in tiny homes on wheels are typically less that 4 feet high and most often accessed via a ladder, rather than stairway. Larger small homes may also include a loft space with higher, heavily sloped ceilings, similar to a finished attic space in a larger home. You may have a small stairway or a drop ladder. If you have high ceilings but don't have a loft, you can opt to build one for additional storage or living space.

    Sleeping Space

    • The tiniest house plans rely upon a loft for sleeping space. These lofts can accommodate a full- or queen-size mattress and comfortably sleep up to two people. Lofts in small homes can be used to create an additional bedroom or provide space for a guest to sleep. Create a comfortable sleeping space by including a tray or small, low table for drinks and a wall-mounted reading light.

    Office or Library

    • Larger loft spaces may be high enough for a desk, filing cabinets and other office necessities. Small-scale furnishings can work best in this space. Place your desk in the highest point of your loft, saving areas with a lower ceiling for infrequently used items. If you don't need a home office, consider turning a loft into a library. A small armchair and low shelves for books can create a cozy reading nook.

    Storage

    • If you're not planning to sleep in your loft, it can provide valuable storage space in a small home. Take the time to plan your storage, allowing space nearest the ladder for food, clothing and other regularly used supplies in your home. Holiday items, out-of-season clothing and mementos can be stored in hard-to-access areas. Depending upon the size of your loft, you may have room for both storage and living space.
