How to Keep Tiles From Warping

Originating centuries ago, clay tiles are still admired today because of their versatility, authenticity and beauty. Tile-making is a tedious process that involves many factors, all of which can impact the tiles’ performance and aesthetic appeal. The drying process for clay tiles is especially crucial and commonly presents the most challenge to tile makers. Improper drying methods often cause clay tiles to warp and curl around the edges, which makes them essentially useless. Fortunately, there are some basic techniques to prevent homemade clay tiles from warping.

Things You'll Need

  • Unpainted drywall pieces
  • Clay scraps
  • Wire racks

Instructions

Ensure that the clay tiles are no thinner than 1/4-inch when you roll them out. Make the tiles about 1/2-inch thick to prevent them from warping.

    • 2

Dry the tiles overnight between two pieces of unpainted drywall after removing them from their molds or cutting them out manually. Cover the edges of the drywall pieces with duct tape to prevent drywall fragments from getting into the wet clay tiles. Drywall absorbs the moisture from clay to promote even drying, which helps inhibit warping.

Wedge leftover scraps of fresh clay against the edges of the tiles as they dry between the drywall pieces. The clay scraps prevent the exposed edges of the tiles from drying more quickly than the top and bottom tile surfaces, which keeps the edges of the tiles from warping and curling. Remove the clay scraps after the tiles have finished drying.

Dry the clay tiles on wire racks for a week after trimming, imprinting and scoring them. Wire racks must have at least 4 inches of space below each layer to ensure the tiles are provided with even air circulation on all sides. Wire racks also help keep clay tiles from warping.
