How to Create a Recessed Bookshelf in the the Garage

A bookshelf is a handy storage device that works well in the garage. Auto repair manuals, home improvement books and hammers fit well on the shelves. The main problem with bookshelves is that they stick out into the work area. One solution to this issue is to build a recessed bookshelf, especially if the work space in the garage is tight.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the space where the bookshelf is going to be installed with a measuring tape. If the support beams in the garage are covered with Sheetrock, then cut away the section of Sheetrock covering the installation area. Measure the width between support beams with a measuring tape. Measure the height and depth of the area. Sketch the shelves on a piece of paper including the measurements. The shelf depth is the width of the boards used to build the bookshelf.

    • 2

Cut the wooden boards for the sides and the width of the bookshelf with a saw. Place the pieces together and measure the dimensions of the space and the wood again. Screw the boards together with wood screws and an electric screwdriver. The shape should resemble a rectangle. Measure and cut a ¼-inch thick piece of plywood that matches the back of the bookshelf. Nail the plywood to the back of the bookshelf frame with finishing nails.

Cut the wooden boards for the shelves so they fit inside the rectangle frame. Measure and mark where the shelves are going to go on the left side of the frame. Slide a board into the frame temporarily. Place a carpenter’s level across the shelf and level the shelf. Mark the shelf placement lines on the right side of the frame.

Line the shelf boards up with the placement marks and screw them in place. Sand any rough edges down with sandpaper. Now is the time to paint or stain the bookshelf, depending on the look of the garage. If the garage is unfinished, then the bookshelf can go without being painted since the wood is not exposed to moisture outside.

Slide the bookshelf in place between the support beams and screw in place. Position the screws so they go from the inside the bookshelf out to the support beam. Use at least two screws for every 12 inches of height. Add more screws if the bookshelf is going to hold very heavy items.
