How to Install Conduit Pipe in a Basement

A conduit pipe houses cables, electrical wires, telephone wires and other utility lines, which can help prevent having these lines exposed. Housing these lines can help prevent corrosion and protect the occupants of your home from electrical shock. Basement conduits are commonly made from PVC pipe, which resists corrosion and water damage. Installing a conduit pipe on a basement wall is a relatively straightforward process that you can complete with basic supplies and masonry tools.

Things You'll Need

  • 4-inch-diameter PVC pipe
  • Hack saw
  • Hand sander
  • 4-inch half-circle brackets
  • Drill
  • Masonry bit
  • Plastic screw anchors
  • Screws
  • Electric screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the length of the conduit. You should leave at least 1 inch of room between the end of the conduit and the basement floor for threading wires and cables.

    • 2

Cut a section of 4-inch-diameter PVC pipe to length with a hack saw. Sand the ends with a hand sander to remove rough edges.

    • 3

Place the conduit on the wall in the desired location. Place a 4-inch half-circle bracket about 4 inches from the top of the conduit and mark the screw holes on the wall with a pen. Repeat this process for each 24 inches of conduit length.

    • 4

Drill through the concrete wall at the screw marks with a drill equipped with a masonry bit. The holes should be slightly larger in diameter than the plastic screw anchors.

    • 5

Insert a plastic screw anchor into each hole. Replace the PVC conduit pipe on the wall and secure each bracket by inserting and tightening screws into each plastic screw anchor with an electric screwdriver.
