How to Move a Ceiling Receptacle

Ceiling receptacles are occasionally found in work rooms and garages, and are commonly used to power overhead devices such as work lights and garage door openers. Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to the receptacle circuit at the circuit breaker panel.

    • 2

Cut an opening in the ceiling for the new box, using a keyhole saw, using the new outlet box as a template. If the ceiling is not covered, like in many garages or basements, you can skip this step.

    • 3

Drill holes in the ceiling joists with a 1-inch hole saw bit to route the new electrical cable through ig necessary. This step won't be necessary if the receptacle location isn't separated from the old one by ceiling joists.

    • 4

Remove the cover from the old receptacle box and remove the outlet with a screwdriver. Loosen the screws on the outlet and remove the wires.

    • 5

Route your new cable through the side of the old outlet box and to the new location. Tack the cable to the joists, if necessary, by hammering in cable staples.

    • 6

Insert the end of the cable through the new outlet box. Cut the cable to length, leaving 6 inches of extra cable at each box.

    • 7

Place the new box in position and screw it into the nearest joist if there's not a finished ceiling, or turn the tabs to lock it into the ceiling if there is.

    • 8

Trim off any excess cable and remove 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of the black and white wires in the cable.

    • 9

Pair the old wires to the new wires at the old receptacle box -- black to black and white to white. Connect them together with wire nuts.

    • 10

Connect the new cable to the screws on the outlet -- black to brass and white to silver.

    • 11

Place the outlet into the box and attach with its screws. Place an outlet cover on the outlet. Place an outlet box cover onto the old outlet box.
