DIY Ceramic Tile Stair Treads

Ceramic tiles add a decorative element to stairs and make them stand out. Depending on personal preference, you can install the tiles on the treads and risers, or only on the treads so they stand out against the painted risers. Available in a variety of styles, ceramic tiles are easy to clean, durable and withstand moderate wear and tear. Similar to tiling any other surface, the installation process involves applying an even layer of grout on the tread before laying the tiles.

Things You'll Need

  • Floor leveling compound
  • 1/8 inch plastic spacers
  • Tile saw
  • Thin-set mortar

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep or vacuum the ceramic stair treads to remove accumulated dirt and expose any low spots that need to be filled. Fill the low spots with floor leveling compound and allow it to dry according to the time specified on the label directions.

    • 2

Measure the width of the topmost tread and mark its center. Dry fit a ceramic tile on the center point and set 1/8 inch plastic spacers on each side. Set another tile on each side, and continue placing spacers and tiles until you can't place another whole tile.

    • 3

Measure the space that is left at each end of the tread. Because you installed the tiles from the center mark, this space on each end will be the same. Cut a ceramic tile to fit the space using a tile saw. Dry fit the cut tile over one end of the tread to be sure it fits properly -- trim excess if required. Cut a tile for the other end of the tread.

    • 4

Mark the tread around the edges of the tiles so you know exactly where they go. Also mark the rest of the treads so the grout lines match. Remove the tiles and spacers.

    • 5

Prepare latex thin-set mortar according to label directions. Spread a thin layer over the tread using a 1/4-inch notched trowel.

    • 6

Center the first tile over the middle of the first tread, lining it up with the marks you made, and press down gently. Install a plastic spacer on each side before placing the next tiles. Lay all but the corner tiles.

    • 7

Check that the tops of the tiles are level. Adjust, if necessary, by pushing down a bit or removing and adding more thin-set. Now place the corner tiles. Repeat this process of spreading thin-set on the treads and laying ceramic tiles for all the stairs. Allow the thin-set to cure for 24 hours before removing the plastic spacers.

Mix grout according to label directions. Spread a thin layer of grout, using a grout float held at a 45-degree angle, over the top of the tiles on the first stair.

    • 9

Allow the grout to set for 10 minutes. Rub the tiled surface with a large, wet sponge to remove excess. Rinse the sponge and change the bucket of water often. When the tiles are clean, wipe them down with a clean terry rag. Wait 24 to 48 hours before using the stairs.
