How to Cut a Vent in a Tile Floor Over Concrete

Installing ceramic tile on top of a concrete floor requires cutting around a variety of objects, including door jambs, cabinets and vents for the heating and air-conditioning system. Although countless ways exist to cut tile around a vent on top of concrete, a couple of methods work best, allowing you to cut and install the tile quickly and efficiently so you can finish the floor in the least amount of time.

You may cut the piece of tile before or after it sets and dries. Although the most common method for professionals is to cut it with a tile saw during the installation, you might have access to only an angle grinder, in which case it is necessary to wait until after the tile sets and dries. Each method requires a different procedure.

Instructions

  1. Method for Cutting After the Tile Sets and Dries

    • 1

Install your tile floor all the way up to the vent.

    • 2

Place the piece of tile you want to cut on top of the vent just like a normal piece of tile. Use a tape measure, pencil and carpenter's square to mark the cutout for that piece of tile.

    • 3

Spread thinset mortar right up to the edge of the vent on all sides. Set the piece of tile, and let it dry for 72 hours.

    • 4

Put on safety glasses. Cut along the cutout marks on the tile with an angle grinder that has a stone blade.

    Method for Cutting During Installation

    • 5

Install the tile floor all the way up to the vent.

    • 6

Mark the tile that you want to cut for the vent just as you would mark it for any other cut, using a tape measure, pencil and carpenter's square.

    • 7

Put on safety glasses. Place the tile on a tile wet saw's tray, and turn on the saw. Push the tile into the saw's blade, using the marks you made on the tile as your cutting guide. Cut out the waste material.

Dry the back of the tile with an old towel before its installation.
