Making Horizontal Plank Cabinet Doors

Building your own cabinet doors can be a satisfying and useful activity. Using horizontal planks to create cabinet doors can lend a unique and unusual look to your cabinets. This style is particularly appropriate for cabinets that are very short and wide, because the horizontal planks will harmonize with the profile of the cabinets. With the grain running horizontally rather than vertically as in most cabinet doors, the wood will swell and shrink more in a vertical than in a horizontal direction.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height and width of the cabinets for which you are building the doors.

    • 2

Cut the number of horizontal planks that you will need for your doors to a length 1 inch longer than the width and height of the cabinets, using the circular saw. For example, if the cabinet opening is 13 inches wide and 30 inches high, you will need two planks at least 7 inches wide cut to a length of 31 inches. Cut the lengths of 1-by-3-inch wood you will use for crosspieces to the width of the cabinet opening minus 2 inches, to allow for plenty of clearance. In this example, you would cut the crosspieces to a length of 11 inches.

    • 3

Lay out two or more planks on a workbench in the configuration in which you want to use them for the door.

    • 4

Place two crosspieces across the backs of the doors.

    • 5

Screw the crosspieces to the horizontal planks by driving 1 1/2-inch-long screws through the crosspieces and into the backs of the horizontal planks.

    • 6

Cut the doors to their final size with a circular saw. By doing this after the doors are assembled, you ensure that the ends of the planks will be even.

    • 7

Attach two hinges to one side of the horizontal plank cabinet doors, one hinge 3 inches from the top of the door and the other hinge 3 inches from the bottom of the door.
