Sweep the roof from any dirt and debris that may impede the setting of the roof.
Heat the tar up in the tar pot over the cast iron burner. Work in small sections to keep the tar at the proper texture. The tar should be thick like a syrup.
Mop a layer of tar over the first section. Start at the back of the roof, farthest from where you are entering the roof so you can work your way backwards without getting yourself suck in a corner. Be generous with the tar, but create an even layer.
Roll a layer of roofing paper, sometimes called roof felt, over the tar. Remove any bubbles between the paper and the tar, smoothing it with the mop if necessary.
Repeat the process across the roof. By the time you get to the end of the roof with the first layer, begin to apply a second layer of tar over the paper, applying an new sheet of paper over it. Continue until you have completed at least three and up to five layers of roofing paper.
Apply a layer of tar over the paper. Pour gravel evenly over the tar. Use a trowel or a broom to smooth the gravel over the tar. Cover all areas with the stones.
