Is It Okay to Have Skylights on a Flat Roof?

Skylights allow sunlight, moonlight and starlight to enter your home. The extra light opens up dark spaces and can make small spaces seem larger. Skylights work on almost any type of roof, including flat roofs. Properly installed skylights won't leak, and skylights on flat roofs offer advantages you won't realize with a skylight on a slanted roof.
  1. Leaks

    • Standing water and leaks are one concern on flat roofs. Skylights are engineered to avoid these two issues. The bubble-shaped surface of many skylights sheds water and snow, preventing the problem of leaks from standing water. Curbs, or the frame on which the skylight is mounted, rise above the roof slightly, providing additional insurance against leaks.

    Light

    • Skylights on flat roofs let in more light than skylights on slanted roofs. Skylights on slanted roofs take in sunlight at an angle, and will be in the shade at least part of the day. Skylights on flat roofs take in more direct light and, unless you're located next to a taller building or tall trees, aren't shaded. If you enjoy a lot of natural light in your home, a skylight on a flat roof can be the answer.

    Installation

    • Installing a skylight on a flat roof requires no special safety equipment or concern about steep roof pitches. Most flat roofs have plenty of room to work safely. Once the installers have determined the correct location for the skylight, they can cut straight down, build the frame for the skylight and install the light over the frame, all without being worried about falling off the roof.

    Other Considerations

    • Flat roofs often house heating and air conditioning equipment, water cisterns and even rooftop gardens. Make sure your roof has space for a skylight. Hire an installer who has experience installing skylights on flat roofs. If possible, look at other skylights on flat roofs to select the size and shape that works best for you. Because skylights on flat roofs receive little shade, choose a skylight with internal blinds you can draw if you desire a darker room.
