How to Replace Roof Shingles Near the Gutter

Shingles protect the roof of a house by preventing water from entering through the roof. They run from the lower edge of the roof up to the ridge with each row overlapping the row below it. This assures that water runs off the roof without puddling. Gutters are metal channels hung to the fascia at the lower edge of the roof. They carry water from the roof to the corners of the house where downspouts guide it down the house and away from the foundation. Extending shingles into the gutter keeps water from seeping behind the fascia board.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear any debris from where you plan to place your ladder for a stable placement. Stand the ladder against the house beneath the shingles you want to replace.

    • 2

Rip the shingles from the roof by hand. Use the claw end of the hammer to rip away any stubborn shingles.

    • 3

Lift the bottom half of a remaining shingle. Slide the tab end of the new shingle beneath the old one, and nail the new shingle into place with three roofing nails. The shingle at the gutter should extend approximately two inches beyond the roof and into the gutter. Repeat across the roof until you have replaced all the shingles you removed.
