How to Install HardiPlank Siding Over a Lath

HardiPlank is a brand name of fiber cement siding that can appear in different textures, including wood paneling. HardiPlanks can be installed in a variety of ways, and one common method is to mount the plank siding over existing panels with lath strips. Lath strips are pieces of wood that act similar to drywall and help prevent gaps in the installation. HardiPlanks can be installed directly over the lath strips with the help of an EZ line alignment tool.

Instructions

    • 1

Install a 1/4-inch lath strip by covering the bottom section where you want to start the lap siding. The sides should typically be installed starting from the bottom.

    • 2

Hammer in wood screws to hold the lath strip up to the siding. Connect the first HardiPlank over the lath strip directly at the bottom.

    • 3

Overlap the HardiPlank siding with a 1 1/4-inch EZ line alignment aid. The EZ line tool helps you keep the HardiPlank aligned and connected to the lath strip.

    • 4

Hammer in three 1-inch nails down from the top of the HardiPlank to fully connect the siding to the lath if you'll be using blind nails later. Blind nails are hidden by the planks above them once the installation is complete.

Drive in three 3/4-inch nails up from the bottom of the plank if you'll be using face nails. Face nails are inserted directly into the plank and are visible once the installation is complete.
