How to Connect a Drain Line to a Septic Tank

Not every building site has access to public utilities. If you live in a more remote location you may need to use a septic tank as a waste disposal system. After the sewer line is installed, it must be connected properly to the septic tank. Connect a drain line to a septic tank yourself without the help of a contractor or professional plumber using only a couple of basic tools to complete the job.

Things You'll Need

  • Drain line
  • Rubber grommet

Instructions

Insert the rubber grommet into the opening in the septic tank designated for the drain pipe. Follow the septic tank manufacturer's instructions concerning the installation of the rubber grommet. Generally, you can slide the grommet into place with your hands.

Slide the drain line into the rubber grommet in the septic tank. Twist the drain pipe gently back and forth as you slide it into the rubber grommet. Insert the pipe into the septic tank to the depth required by the septic tank's manufacturer. For example, some septic tanks may require the pipe to be inserted 6 or 8 inches into the grommet.

Tighten the retainer band to secure the rubber grommet to the drain line. Turn the screw or bolt clockwise using the screwdriver or wrench to tighten the retainer band. Some rubber grommets are designed with compression fittings that tighten as the drain line is inserted into the grommet.
