How to Install V-Crimp Panels in Metal Roofing

V-crimp panels are among the simplest types of roofing to install as their lengthwise ridges allow them to overlap for a rainproof seal. Before installing the panels themselves, you'll need to cover the plywood roof deck with tar paper underlayment and install the eave trim to further protect the roof structure from damage by the elements.

Things You'll Need

  • V-crimp metal roofing panels
  • Wood screws with washers
  • Butyl tape

Instructions

    • 1

Position a V-crimp roofing panel in the lower downwind corner of the roof. The side of the panel should come just to the edge of the gable, and the lower edge should overlap the eave by at least 1 inch.

    • 2

Screw the panel into the plywood deck then place one wood screw with a washer next to each crimp and one in the middle of each flat portion every 2 feet along the length of the panel.

    • 3

Place the next panel just above the first and overlapped by 6 inches then secure it the same way with the wood screws and washers. Continue upward by laying panels until you reach the ridge. It may be necessary to trim the top panel to fit.

Apply a strip of butyl tape along the inside vertical edge of the column of panels. Set the first panel of the next column in place and overlap its edgemost crimp. Install this column just like the first one and continue, one column at a time, until you reach the upwind gable.
