How to Frame a Slab for a Brick Ledge

On soft soil, brick walls, brick ledges and other brick structures should be built on sturdy structures like concrete slabs. In order to create a concrete slab, you must create a frame that will hold the concrete as it dries. A frame for a concrete slab doesn't need to be made from high-quality wood, but it should be made out of straight, warp-free lumber.

Things You'll Need

  • Shovel
  • Tamper
  • Measuring tape
  • 4 pieces of lumber

Instructions

    • 1

Dig a trench for the concrete slab if you intend for the top of the slab to be level with the ground. The depth of the trench should be equal to the depth of the slab and just a few inches larger than the slab on each side. Use a tamper to flatten the bottom of the trench. If the slab will be resting on the ground, then no trench will be necessary. The dimensions of the slab should be 1 inch larger than the ledge on each side.

    • 2

Measure the first piece of lumber to fit one side of the frame. Mark the lumber with a pencil to show the appropriate length for that side. Repeat this step with the other pieces of lumber so that each piece of lumber is marked to match a different side of the frame.

    • 3

Cut each piece of lumber in the spot marked, using a circular saw and wearing protective eyewear.

    • 4

Label the piece of lumber meant for the top of the frame as side "A." Moving clockwise around the frame, label each piece of lumber with the next letter in the alphabet. This means the piece of lumber meant for the right side of the frame will be labeled as side "B," the bottom piece will be side "C" and the left piece will be side "D."

    • 5

Straddle side A and hold the end of side B to the end of side A. Nail the two ends together with two nails.

    • 6

Nail the end of side C to the free end of side B. Use two nails.

    • 7

Fit side D up against the free ends of side C and side A. Nail each end of side D to the corresponding ends of side C and A.

    • 8

Lift the frame and carry it into the trench. Center the frame in the trench. If there is no trench, carry the frame to the spot where the ledge will be.
