How to Use UBC Codes

If you want to build a structure or remodel an existing one, chances are you will need a permit and an inspection by the local building department. Until recently, the Uniform Building Code (UBC) acted as a template or model code forming the basis for most construction requirements in the U.S. In the year 2000, the UBC was replaced by the International Building Code (IBC), but the UBC is still used in some locations.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Local Adopted Code

    • 1

Check with your local building department to determine their construction requirements and adopted standards. Ask if they are using the UBC and if so, what year.

    • 2

Ask about any possible local amendments that are more stringent than the model codes. Most jurisdictions modify one or more of the model codes making amendments, which vary by location. Make sure you know what amendments might be applicable in your locality.

    • 3

Ask what inspections are required by the building department. Ask when they should be scheduled and what to expect.

    • 4

After speaking with the building department, get a copy of the UBC or IBC you will need.

    • 5

Read the individual UBC chapters carefully and determine which portions apply to your project.

    • 6

Determine if additional reading of supplemental code books is needed based on the information provided in the UBC.
