Find out where the sewer pipe leaves your house. The sewer pipe may run from a bathroom or laundry room. Push the metal rod into the ground near the outside of the foundation. You want to probe with the metal rod until you come into contact with the sewer pipe. You may need to search around the entire foundation to locate the pipe. Probe the soil gently so that you do not damage the sewer pipe.
Dig down to the sewer pipe with the shovel. Remove enough dirt so that you can see which direction the sewer pipe is going. The septic tank is usually within 20 feet of the house.
Follow the sewer pipe to the septic tank. You may need to dig several holes along the sewer line to find the septic tank. Dig in a straight line along the sewer pipe.
Search for the septic tank. Use the metal rod to determine the location of the septic tank. Use the shovel to dig a hole at the end of the septic tank. You want to uncover the pipe exiting the septic tank. Follow the pipe to the diverter box. You need to keep digging along the pipe until you find the diverter box.
