How to Mount Kitchen Cabinets on a Pony Wall

Pony walls are known by a few names in the industry, including knee wall and half wall, and generally serve as a decorative wall that separates one area from another but only comes up to around waist height. Mounting kitchen cabinets on a pony wall is the exact same process as for any other type of wall, with the studs within the wall acting as the anchoring mechanism for the cabinets.

Instructions

  1. Plan & Prepare

    • 1

Plan the layout for your cabinets. Determine the height you want your wall cabinet set at along the pony wall. For example, if you know you want your finish countertop height flush with the top of the pony wall you need to take into account the thickness of the countertop as well as any substrate beneath it (such as a sheet of plywood plus a sheet of underlayment for tile and natural stone installations) and lower the cabinet accordingly.

    • 2

Connect any cabinet sections together with the drill and finish screws so that all the pieces are flush and square with each other before installing them on the wall.

    • 3

Use the stud finder to find the studs and mark with a pencil along the top of the pony wall so you have a reference point when you hang the actual cabinet. Draw a level line with your pencil and level at the height you want your cabinets installed at.

    Mounting

    • 4

Align the cabinets horizontally according to your design plans. Use the level line as a reference point for the top edge of your cabinets.

    • 5

Mount one corner of the cabinets by sinking one of the 3-inch wood screws, with the drill, through the cabinet and into the stud of the pony wall.

    • 6

Adjust the other corner of the cabinet until the entire top is aligned with the level reference line. Sink another screw into the stud at this corner.

    • 7

Finish anchoring the cabinet to the pony wall. Set the level along the path of the studs within the interior of the cabinets and draw a reference plumb line down the back of the cabinets. Sink screws into the studs every few inches to securely fasten the cabinet to the pony wall.
