How to Block Framing

Blocking framing refers to the installation of large blocks of 1 ½-inch-thick lumber between vertical wall studs. The additional blocking is installed before the drywall encloses the wall. The blocking carries the weight of heavy fixtures, such as flat screen televisions, wall cabinets or commercial bathroom fixtures after the drywall is installed.

Instructions

    • 1

After the wall is framed, measure the distance between the vertical wall studs. The studs are installed 16 inches, on center, apart from one another. The typical distance is 14 1/ 2 inches. But measure the actual distance to adjust for construction irregularities.

    • 2

Cut the blocking with the builders saw so that it fits snugly into the distance between the studs.

    • 3

Measure the mounting height for a fixture, cabinet or television up from the floor. Mark this height on the existing wall studs.

    • 4

Fasten the blocking into the wall between the studs at the proper height. The center line of the blocking should align with the height of the fixture or cabinet. Position the blocking so that it is flush with the front surface of the wall. Position the blocking so that the widest face of the blocking is facing into the room.
