How to Bend a Metal C-Channel Track

Metal C-channel tracks are used in conjunction with steel framing to hold the vertical supports in position. The C-shaped tracks must be bent occasionally to accommodate corners, windows doorways and other openings. While the track is made of very strong steel, it is not necessary to heat the track to bend it. It can be bent with your hands, although a more exact bend can be made with sheet metal locking pliers.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the flanges on each side at the bend point. Make sure these marks are even.

    • 2

Snip the thin steel of the flanges along the marks, cutting it all the way to the horizontal piece at the back.

    • 3

Bend the C-channel track slightly at the bend point. Clamp the sheet metal locking pliers around the metal and create the angle needed. In the majority of cases, it will need to be 90 degrees.

    • 4

Hold the track in place and secure it on each side of the bend with screws at the nearest available pre-drilled hole.
