How to Use a Stud Joist Hanger

Joists are horizontal floor supports that span the distance between the walls of a home. During construction, joist hangers secure the joists in place over a sheathed vertical wall stud. Stud joist hangers are constructed of galvanized metal formed into a "U" shape to cradle the joist from each side and the bottom. You can install the number of stud joist hangers required for your floor joists with the proper tools, materials and home construction skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the stud joist hanger in position. The "U" shape of the hanger must be squarely fitted over the wall stud and snug against the sheathing. The upper part of the hanger must be flat against the top plate of the wall.

    • 2

Drive a 10d common nail through one of the preformed holes of the joist hanger into the top plate using a hammer. Leave approximately 1/4 inch of the nail head exposed from the plate.

    • 3

Check the positioning of the joist hanger relative to the wall stud. If the alignment is correct, drive the nail the rest of the way into the top plate.

    • 4

Drive the remaining nails through the hanger holes into the plate.

    • 5

Repeat steps 1 through 4 on all the stud joist hangers to be installed.

    • 6

Install the joists into the hangers on either end of the walls and drive nails into each side of the joist through the preformed holes with the hammer.
