How to Measure the Area for Earthbag Dome Bags

Earthbag domes are round structures built using sacs filled with soil, gravel or a mixture of sand and clay. The sacs are stacked in layers until they meet at the apex of the structure. Because Earthbag structures are usually round, not rectangular like conventional buildings, measuring the area for the structure requires a certain technique.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear and level the area where you wish to build your Earthbag dome. Place a stake in the ground at the center of the area.

    • 2

Measure a length of twine half the size you want your finished dome to be. Tie one end of the twine to the stake. Stretch the other end as far out as it will go.

    • 3

Walk in a circle, marking the ground at the end of the length of twine with spray paint or chalk until the circle is complete.

    • 4

Dig a trench at least 18 inches wide and 12 inches deep outward from the marked line.

    • 5

Fill the trench with a layer of gravel to just below ground level. Begin stacking your Earthbags inside the trench. This will provide some stability to help avoid shifting.
