How to Make Sure a Bedroom Is Up to Code

Home construction and improvement projects are complex because every household must abide by building codes. Before renovating, take a careful look at your home and see if anything is not up to code. Change those before renovating the house even further. Building codes in your bedroom are especially important because they are made for your safety.

Instructions

    • 1

Call your local building authority. Ask if any permits exist and if you have to fill out any forms. Some renovation projects require homeowners to fill out a detailed project description and the estimated cost.

    • 2

Draw two to four plans of the bedroom with floor and elevation separately. Show them to your local building authority to get approval on your bedroom renovation.

    • 3

Include a window area that equates a minimum of 8 percent of the floor space. This window must be able to open halfway to ensure proper lighting and ventilation.

    • 4

Ventilate your bedroom with outside air of 15 cfm for each occupant in the house. This can be achieved through the windows or through mechanical ventilation.

    • 5

Check to make sure the bedroom has at least two exits. The entrance is considered an exit as well as windows and attached rooms that also have an exit to the main house. Exits must be able to open from the inside of the bedroom with no keys or special instructions involved.

    • 6

Measure your windows. They must be a minimum of 34-inches high and 20-inches wide.

    • 7

Measure the bedroom dimensions. The dimensions must be at least 7-feet by 7-feet and 7 1/2-feet tall.

    • 8

Check to make sure any soffits, stair stringers, ducts or vents can be fire-blocked to prevent fires.

    • 9

Add sheetrock and insulation to the walls to ensure the bedroom becomes fire proof for a minimum of one hour.

    • 10

Add a smoke alarm in each bedroom to follow fire codes.
