Place the power strip you're using over the area of granite where it will be installed. Trace its outline with the pencil. Remove the power strip and use the straight edge and square to draw a rectangle around the outline of the power strip. Make the rectangle 1 inch larger than the outline to give the power cord space to exit the recess.
Place four strips of masking tape around the rectangle. Push the tape firmly into the granite and leave the inner edges of the rectangle free from tape.
Put on the respirator and safety glasses. Wet the surface of the stone with the spray bottle. Continue to spray both the diamond cutting disc and the stone while cutting and sanding. This will cut down on excessive dust in the air. Alternatively, prop up the hose of a shop vacuum close to the workspace to remove dust.
Turn on the angle grinder with the diamond cutting disc attached. Run the edge of the cutting disc along your tape marks with slow, steady and controlled passes. Cut each of the four lines alternately. Each pass should not exceed 1/8 inch in depth. When the cutting disc has cut completely through the four sides of the rectangle, cut out the four corners that are holding the granite rectangle in place.
Change the attachment on the angle grinder to the 50 grit diamond-coated sanding disc. Run the edge of the sanding disc over the edges of the cut granite. Move the angle grinder in a back and forth motion. Use the 50 grit disc to remove any of the cut marks that are left on the granite edges.
Change to the 100 grit sanding disc and continue to smooth the rough edges of the stone. To achieve the shine and polish of the original surrounding granite, use the 500, 1,000 and 1,500 grit sanding discs to buff the stone.
Place the power strip into the recess and mark where its attachment holes are located on the back area of the recess. Power strips usually have holes that go from the front to the back. If you can't find mounting holes, open the power strip to attach its back plate into the recess and then snap on the front plate.
Drill holes in the marked locations into the back area of the recess using the electric drill and a drill bit that corresponds to the screw anchors you are using. Place screw anchors into the holes.
Hold the power strip in the recess and turn the screws into their corresponding anchors using a screwdriver.
