How to Install Magnesite Over Tar Paper

Magnesite, also called diato, has been used for decades to provide a sheer, even coat over a variety of objects and areas, from steps to decks. Popular during the 1930s and 1940s, older houses tend to have this seamless flooring on decks or inside their homes. However, when cracks begin to develop in the surface of the magnesite, ensure that it remains waterproof by placing tar paper underneath it and sealing it with a sealer.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure that tar paper is secured to the area where you wish to place the magnesite, stapling down any pieces that are slightly loose.

    • 2

Heat the tar paper with a gun to have it adhere to the surface, if it is perpetually in shade and will not be heated through environmental factors.

    • 3

Hammer in the magnesite sheets over the tar paper, ensuring that it evenly covers the surface and is trimmed down to fit the dimensions of the area.

    • 4

Paint on one coat of the sealer, ensuring it completely covers the entire area. Allow it to completely dry according to the sealer's directions.

    • 5

Apply another coat of sealer to the surface evenly. Again, allow it to dry before using the surface.
