How to Build on Decomposing Granite

From driveways to patios, laid stones require a sturdy surface as a base. Decomposing granite provides this, as it can be tamped and settled to remain flat and unmoving for many years. Any project that requires stones or bricks to be laid on the ground may be built on decomposing granite. Mix the granite with a stabilizer if desired or use it in its pure form.

Instructions

    • 1

Crush the gravel, if too large, to pieces no larger than 1/4-inch diameter.

    • 2

Determine the area where you wish the bricks to be laid. Mark out the area with stakes.

    • 3

Shovel out the area marked with stakes to at least 8 inches below the surface.

    • 4

Place the level on the ground throughout the area. Ensure that the entire bottom is completely level.

    • 5

Shovel the gravel into the area. Smooth it out until it is an even layer 4-inches deep.

    • 6

Compact the gravel using the compacting machine. Pour one inch of sand on top and compact it as well. Set the stones or bricks on top of this base, as desired.
