How to Notch a Load-Bearing Beam

Load-bearing beams support the weight of objects such as a ceiling or hand rail. Notches are cut into the top of these beams, so they sit flush against the object they support. Incorrectly cut notches may result in misalignment of the load-bearing beam, which is unsafe. If the weight is not distributed properly, the structure may collapse. Work carefully and cut each notch to the correct size and angle when installing a load-bearing beam.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and depth of the beam or rail the load-bearing beam will support, using a measuring tape.

    • 2

Mark cut lines of the same dimensions on the top of the support beam, with a pencil. Use a squaring tool to extend the lines to the sides of the support beam.

    • 3

Cut along the cut lines with a hack saw. Keep the blade straight while cutting. Angled cuts negatively affect the weight distribution and balance of the structure.

    • 4

Remove the notched piece. Push the support beam into place, and make sure the edges are flush.
