How to Retrofit Metal Framing

Retrofit metal framing allows a building owner to place a new roof onto an existing one. This metal framing fits over the old metal. With this retrofit metal framing, the building owner protects the existing roof that may have decayed due to old age or damaged by weather. The building owner saves on costs with a retrofit metal framing. He does not have to tear down the old metal roof completely and haul away wasted materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the building’s joists to cover an old damaged roof. Examine where the existing metal roof fasteners are to determine where to place the new fasteners. Visually inspect the joists from underneath in the attic space, and measure where the joists are with the tape measure. Write down the measurements.

    • 2

Place down the sub-purlins so that the existing roof's ribbed or corrugated structure fits into the sub-purlins notches. Start at the center of the roof. Space out the sub-purlins every 12 inches.

    • 3

Place in the anchors with the screw gun. Screw the anchors into the prepunched holes of the sub-purlins. Install insulation before adding on the roof paneling.
