How to Do Tape Edging to Caulk Brick Molding

Brick molding is the trim placed over gaps created between brick and other surfaces, such as window frames, during the building process. It helps maintain the energy efficiency of the structure while hiding the nature of the gap itself. The gap and the space between the brick and the trim still need to be filled. Using caulk for filling provides a moisture resistant barrier over the gap that’s flexible enough to move when the structure shifts. Since the exterior is easily visible, it’s important that the caulk line on the trim be as straight and neat as possible. Fortunately, all it takes for straightedge like lines is a couple of strips of masking tape.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear away any debris or dirt from the molding area with a wire brush. Make certain you clear out the space that you’re filling with the molding as well.

    • 2

Press the insulative filler material into the gap, filing the entire length of the gap but leaving about 1/4-inch of space in the top of the gap over the molding for the caulk. Use a utility knife to cut the material to length if necessary.

    • 3

Cut the tip off the caulk tube at a 45-degree angle with the utility knife. Hold the angled tube against the gap over the filler material so that it’s held at a 45-degree angle to the brick surface. Pull the trigger on the caulk gun to push the caulk from the tube and into the gap. Fill the gap completely with the caulk to the level of the brick surface by dragging the flowing caulk along the gap.

    • 4

Install the brick molding following the molding manufacturer’s instructions. Place a strip of masking tape onto the bricks adjacent to the molding, and along the edge of the molding.

    • 5

Fill the gap between the brick and the molding with the caulk, until the caulk slightly overflows the opening.

    • 6

Moisten your thumb and then drag it along the line of caulk to smooth it out. The caulk will overflow the sides of the opening onto the masking tape as you smooth it. Pull the masking tape off the bricks and molding to create sharp straight edge lines to the caulk, and then allow the caulk to dry for the time period recommended by the caulk manufacturer.
