How to Install Commercial Entrance Air Curtains

Air curtains, also known as "air doors" are electrically operated devices designed to separate or partition two or more areas from one another for the purposes of temperature maintenance, fume control or insect control. As the name implies, a curtain of air is blown across the doorway to be partioned off, thus creating a "barrier" that keeps temperature, fumes and insects from traversing the doorway. These ingenious devices are easy to install and can produce substantial energy savings when mounted in high-traffic areas.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Stepladder
  • Hand level
  • Drill
  • Concrete or wood bits
  • Eye protection

Instructions

    • 1

Locate an installation spot above a doorway that contains either a concrete or wooden door header. The door header is the vertical face above the door facing the inside of the room to be partitioned with the air curtain. Measure the available space to ensure that there is adequate room to hang the mounting plate used to support the air curtain. Make sure the unit is installed inside a room for best results.

    • 2

Remove the four mounting screws from the back of the main air curtain's body to remove the mounting plate. Place the screws in a safe location for later use.

    • 3

Hold the mounting plate (included with the unit) flush against the door header where the unit is to be mounted. Climb a stepladder to reach the header. Place a hand level on top of the mounting plate to make sure it is completely level. Mark the visible mounting holes with a pencil so you will know where to drill the mounting holes and install the mounting bolts.

    • 4

Remove the mounting plate. Carefully drill the mounting bolt holes previously marked to a depth of 1 1/2 inches using a drill with a 1/4-inch bit. Attach the mounting plate to the door header using 2-inch-long, 5/8-inch wood screws. When mounting on a concrete door header, use 2-inch cement anchors. Tighten the mounting plate securely.

    • 5

Hang the air curtain onto the mounting plate by setting the top edge of the air curtain onto the top edge of the mounting plate, at a 30-degree angle. Once the air curtain top edge has "caught" behind the top edge of the mounting plate, allow the curtain to hang down flush against the mounting plate.

    • 6

Tighten the four set screws that hold the air curtain against the mounting plate with an Allen wrench. Plug the air curtain into a 120-volt, grounded electrical outlet. Turn the unit on, and adjust the air flow as desired.
