Overhead vs. Underground Wiring

Overhead wiring and underground wiring have little in common in terms of advantages. In fact, there are distinct reasons for choosing either arrangement. If you have a choice of underground or overhead wiring when shopping for a home or apartment, the type of wiring can affect your lifestyle.
  1. Damage and Outages

    • More than 90 percent of electrical outages are caused by damage to overhead electrical wires, according to Edison Electric. These above-ground wires are subject to breaking from falling tree limbs, ice, wind, vandalism, animals and auto accidents. By comparison, underground wiring is not subject to these disruptive factors. However, feeder cables that lead from transformers to underground wiring are subject to breakage because they are above the ground. If you live in a location with underground electrical wiring, you will experience fewer outages. However, if there is a problem that requires digging to get to the wires, the outages you experience will last longer.

    Cost

    • Underground wiring is more expensive to put in. New construction projects make it easier and cheaper to install underground wiring, because there are less obstacles already in place. Installing underground wiring in existing neighborhoods can present problems in overcoming rock barriers, water seepage and structures. The utility industry estimates that overhead wiring costs about $10 per foot, whereas underground wiring runs $20 to $40 per foot. While this cost is initially paid by the utility, you should expect more expensive bills in areas that convert to underground wiring. The higher bills are calculated to help offset utility installation expenses.

    Maintenance

    • Maintenance of electrical wiring is easier. Visual inspections of wiring can reveal problems before they become more serious. Underground wiring is difficult to inspect and may require digging to find the problem. This kind of maintenance is much more expensive than maintenance for exposed wiring.

    Appearance

    • Overhead wiring affects the appearance of a neighborhood. In areas with numerous overhead wires, the view of the sky and tall buildings can be obstructed to the point that it could be considered unsightly. Underground wiring solves this problem completely.
